Gareth Harvey
Founder of Octaveleap Music
Gareth is a freelance saxophonist, multi-instrumentalist, arranger, producer and educator based in Cape Town, South Africa. He has performed throughout South Africa and internationally with various bands, theatre groups and orchestras. He holds a BMus degree in chamber music and musicology from the University of Stellenbosch and a Jazz Licentiate diploma from Trinity Guildhall London. He has performed at many high profile events, venues and festivals including Leopards Creek Game Reserve, Northwards Mansion, The World Luxury Cruise liner, Tintswalo Atlantic, Cape Town International Film Festival, The National Arts Festival, Joy of Jazz, Kirstenbosch Concert Series, Up The Creek Festival, Oppikoppi , The Queens Plate and Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival where he performed with members of the New York Metropolitan Opera Orchestra.
In his capacity as a versatile working musician, Gareth has performed with The Johnny Cooper Orchestra, electro-swing turned indie group PRAVDA, SAMA award-winning Afro-pop band Native Young, Mike Perry, Frank Paco, Ian Smith, Afrikaans Hip Hop legend Hemel Besem, Bernice Boikanyo, and two of South Africa's most respected jazz pioneers Paul Hanmer and McCoy Mrubata. Notable clients and celebrities he has performed for include former Mayor of Cape Town Patricia De Lille, Arch Bishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, actor/comedian John Cleese, Hollywood stars Catharine Zeta Jones and Hugh Grant, business mogul Johann Rupert, satirist/comedian Peter Dirk Uys, rugby legend Francois Pienaar, Steinhoff Group, Microsoft, Old Mutual, Telkom, The South Korean Consulate and the World Economic Forum.
Gareth has held a number of hotel residencies with hotel groups around Africa including Tsogo Sun and Marriott, as well as a residency at the Ritz-Carlton Luxury Hotel in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Apart from his performance work, he has worked as an educator at a number of schools and conducted workshops at college campuses. For 4 years he was a woodwind and jazz improvisation teacher at the highly renowned Jazz Workshop School of Music in Cape Town.
Currently, Gareth is an active member of highly acclaimed gypsy rock group Crimson House. He has released two albums with the jazz fusion saxophone quartet SAXIT (Click here to listen to the album Systeme Diabolique), and has recorded with an number of groups and artists including the Blues Boers, The Shabs, Emile YX? and McCoy Mrubata.
